Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, formerly president of Ford motor company, had a formula for 'winning' the Vietnam war. The formula was quite simple. If you kill more of the enemy than they kill of you, you win.
Ho Chi Minh dedicated his entire life to freeing Vietnam from foreign occupation. During World War ll the Japanese occupied Vietnam, having displaced the French occupiers. Ho Chi Minh worked as an intelligence agent for the U.S. during WWII. Ho Chi Minh was well versed in American history, and believed that when the Japanese were defeated, America would grant the Vietnamese independence. Ho had even written, 'Declaration of Independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam'
General Vo Nguyen Giap is regarded as one of the greatest generals of the 20th century. He surrounded and forced the French to surrender in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu. Giap was also architect of the 1968 Tet offensive, which led to the American withdrawal. Giap was a university graduate and history professor, prior to dedicating his life to Vietnamese liberation. His tactics are taught at military academies worldwide.
In the course of his life General Vo Nguyen Giap led his army against France, Japan, America, Cambodia and China. He defeated them all.
